Will the Goldies get slagged in the explosion/implosion ot the ship? I'm hoping so.
megados 2nd Feb 2022, 5:05 PM edit delete reply

Hopefully some will. That would be nice. Better still, all. That would be nicer.
Rashala 2nd Feb 2022, 12:56 AM edit delete reply

Being badaboom.....wait is that thing antimatter powered? If so. Oh boy duck and cover!
Lurker314 2nd Feb 2022, 1:23 AM edit delete reply
Two completely unrelated questions: 1) What is the minimal safe distance? 2) How fast is that scooter?
Jan 3rd Feb 2022, 4:19 AM edit delete reply
I would say that the 2 ?'s are VERY much related ;-)
Lurker314 3rd Feb 2022, 10:16 PM edit delete reply
All in good time...
mjkj 2nd Feb 2022, 2:10 AM edit delete reply

uh-oh...

they should request assistance from Luna...

I hope they will make it...

...I wonder how many goldies the explosion will take...
Just_IDD 2nd Feb 2022, 5:08 AM edit delete reply
Re goldoes... probably not enough.
Visvires 4th Feb 2022, 4:03 AM edit delete reply
I get the impression that Luna's assistance is posting bounties and letting Rangers sort out the details.
Deoxy 9th Feb 2022, 7:09 AM edit delete reply
Usually, yes, but in extreme cases, I believe there have been mentions that they have some significant orbital bombardment capabilities.
megados 2nd Feb 2022, 5:49 AM edit delete reply

From this, I get the sense that the "clear-speaking" one, is the lead, and a living "thing" in a suit, and the others are automatons or bots or androids?

I hope the destruct sequence doesn't take too long, or too many of them might get out of range.

Re: Alt text, I would too! P.S. I like the "main thruster light wash" in the first panel!
Oldarmourer 2nd Feb 2022, 6:53 AM edit delete reply
Can't have a Star Trek look without lens flare, even if it is a more Star Wars-ish 'licence' plate ;)
Rocket Fueled 4th Feb 2022, 9:04 AM edit delete reply

Yeah, the light wash looked great, especially with the contrast of the stone arch in the background.

With this strip she's officially qualified to become a Captain in Star Fleet.
Lurker314 2nd Feb 2022, 5:35 PM edit delete reply
I'm pretty certain that's "commander", not "captain"--and only if the thing running the ship's systems qualifies is sentient.

I. am. SUCH. a. nerd.
Centcomm 3rd Feb 2022, 10:24 AM edit delete reply

for blowing up her own ship? pretty much.
Deanatay 3rd Feb 2022, 10:35 PM edit delete reply
But, does she go by "Captain Tamsin" or "Captain Buchannan"?
Oldarmourer 2nd Feb 2022, 6:54 AM edit delete reply
"if I can't have it, then you can't have it either, so nyaahhh :P"
Centcomm 3rd Feb 2022, 10:24 AM edit delete reply

yep
Oldarmourer 2nd Feb 2022, 6:57 AM edit delete reply
Does "pomang beltalowda qiao" translate to "fuck you and anyone that looks like you...and anyone in the general vicinity" ?
robnot 2nd Feb 2022, 6:27 PM edit delete reply
translates too pomang = martian duster,. beltalowda = belter, or i am belter,. and qiao = bridge, or communist group,.. it's a "destruct sequence" it's not suppose to make sense..
BUT,, it's a destruct sequence ,, so yeah ANY wording translates to "fuck you and any in the area.!!" or what you sed.. :)
Centcomm 3rd Feb 2022, 10:23 AM edit delete reply

pretty much.. they are randomly chosen words used as a 'Key' and confirmation.
Deanatay 3rd Feb 2022, 10:33 PM edit delete reply
Dunno, but someone's been watching The Expanse...
Oldarmourer 4th Feb 2022, 7:31 AM edit delete reply
Never seen it, is that where the language comes from ?
Rocket Fueled 4th Feb 2022, 9:07 AM edit delete reply

DEFINITELY watching/reading The Expanse...
Centcomm 5th Feb 2022, 11:58 PM edit delete reply

HAHAH MAYBE..
Eli... 4th Feb 2022, 4:21 AM edit delete reply
No Boom?... *sigh* No Boom.... No Boom today, Boom tomorrow. There's always a Boom tomorrow.
Oldarmourer 4th Feb 2022, 7:30 AM edit delete reply
Somebody's got to have some damned perspective around here ;)
Sooner or later 'BOOM' !!
Rocket Fueled 4th Feb 2022, 9:09 AM edit delete reply

"Where was the ka-boom? The giant, earth-shattering ka-boom?" - Marvin the Martian
Ryu Santos 4th Feb 2022, 4:16 PM edit delete reply

Sorry, you forgot the llludium Q-36 space modulator. So no Earth shattering ka-boom for you.
Deanatay 5th Feb 2022, 11:43 AM edit delete reply
But it obstructs our view of Venus!
Oldarmourer 4th Feb 2022, 7:49 AM edit delete reply
Dunno if I agree with their list or how they put it on the screen but....
Everything did blow up real good ;)

Reminds me of an old artillery saying. "Call us when you need to remove a pesky grid square."
MarianGriffith 5th Feb 2022, 5:28 AM edit delete reply
The safe radius of an antimatter explosion rather depends on the amount of antimatter.

If that ship has 1kg the resulting explosion would be just shy of the most powerful H-bomb ever (43 megatons versus approximately 50 megatons)
If it has 100kg then it would likely create a supervolcano on that spot and the crater would cover a significant part of the continent.and be several km deep.
it would take in the order of 3000kg of antimatter to create an explosion comparable to a asteroid impact like the one that wiped out the dinosaurs and most life on earth.

An ounce of antimatter would yield in the order of 1 megaton, which is still city-killing in terms of radius and force.

Even 1 gram (or a 1000th kilogram) would still have some 20 kiloton explosion, which is comparable to the bombs that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and which much more and nastier radiation.

So ... it is probably better if that ship does not blow up its antimatter :)
(though these two might still prefer that to the alternative of being Cybermanned or Daleked, if they knew that was what was being planned for them by these goldies)

So ... it is probably better if that ship does not blow up its antimatter :) -- @MarianGriffith

IF there is any antimatter aboard the ship at all, and IF the ship is destroyed, it seems it would be rather difficult to PREVENT the antimatter from blowing up at that point. (Disclaimer: I am not, nor have I ever been anti-matter.) Once containment is lost, it seems that the anti-matter present would have little difficulty finding nearby matter with which to combine. The only thing preventing the anti-matter explosion at that point would be good manners -- a feature with which anti-matter is traditionally deficient. ^_^

So, we probably should hope that the ship isn't actually carrying or using any anti-matter.
Lurker314 9th Feb 2022, 12:42 AM edit delete reply
But I wanted an EARTH-shattering KaBoom!
Old Fart 9th Feb 2022, 12:52 AM edit delete reply
As I recall from the Dan Brown Movie the "God Particle" or Anti Mater lost containment and blew up a helicopter that was ascending over the Vatican the pilot parachuted out to safety and there was no damage to the Vatican or Rome. However Hollywood special effects can work miracles six shooters that fire fifteen of twenty times without being reloaded.
Gilrandir 9th Feb 2022, 7:30 AM edit delete reply
The movie is Angels & Demons, from the Dan Brown novel of the same name. The container allegedly had about 1 gram of anti-matter.
Oldarmourer 9th Feb 2022, 7:50 AM edit delete reply
doesn't the 'yield' depend on how many of the anti-matter particles contact an exact opposite in spin, charge, etc ?
Nothing has 100% efficiency so calculating a total conversion of mass to energy might be a little on the high side ?
Or is that already taken into account for the yield tables ?
Gilrandir 9th Feb 2022, 8:43 AM edit delete reply
Not my field, so I can’t speak to yield. That was@MarianGriffith. A couple of websites suggest 1g = 20 kt, but they may just all be getting their numbers from the same source.
Oldarmourer 9th Feb 2022, 1:35 PM edit delete reply
The first A-bombs got a 20kt yield with a few kilos of fissable material, unless she's hauling tonnes of it, anti-matter probably isn't worth the effort to use it as a weapon, unless you're trying to miniaturize it and even then, producing a magnetic bottle or other means of seperating the antimatter from matter probably takes up more room than the casing of a low yield fission weapon some of which were used in artillery pieces and mortars. the ones I dealt with weren't all that big compared to other A/C munitions and a lot were made smaller and higher yield later.
megados 9th Feb 2022, 6:58 PM edit delete reply

Most likely is if there actually IS antimatter present, (it hasn't really been established) it is probably used in the propulsion system. A powerful self destruct can be had, by simply shutting down containment ;)
Oldarmourer 10th Feb 2022, 1:24 PM edit delete reply
Or jettisoning the warp core ;)
Gilrandir 10th Feb 2022, 1:06 AM edit delete reply
In many SF stories, they don’t bother using anti-matter in weapons, but do use it as fuel. Which, of course, means you are flying around in a big bomb with bucket seats and a communication system. But then, that is just as true if you are sitting on a few tonnes of rocket fuel and oxidizer. I agree that, as a weapon, anti-matter would seem to offer more liabilities than benefits. Especially if you consider the prospect of a magazine explosion. Anyone remember the H.M.S. Hood?
robnot 9th Feb 2022, 8:27 AM edit delete reply
no new comic.!
Centcom-actual or TR will explain later..
all i can say was,, there was an "issue"...
Gilrandir 9th Feb 2022, 8:45 AM edit delete reply
Wouldn’t that mean the issue was that there was no issue? ^_^
Oldarmourer 9th Feb 2022, 1:39 PM edit delete reply
Hope everything's alright or at least fixable, and nobody got sick or injured.
Technical difficulties are one thing but organic malfunctions are another kettle of fish entirely.
At least you said Cent or TR would explain so that means they're in a position to do so and not stuck in a hospital bed, and I sincerely hope they're not standing beside one.
This year is shaping up to be no more fun than the last one :)
