Yes, she is very annoying. I want to Gibbs her with rings on that have very large stones. Worn backwards so the stones are palmward. Or as I put it when I'm being less delicate: I want to bitchslap her with rings on.
Maybe Andrea and Britta are actually lovers and just have an ‘Odd Couple’ vibe going on? One is quiet and laconic, while the other is ebullient and voluble. Each brings pieces to the relationship the other is lacking, and while their differences bring tension to the relationship, their complementary features inevitably draw them together again. ^_^
Well, if you were going for annoying and ignorant, you hit it it out of the park. You have also done a very good job of defining family. It is so very true.
Because an official representative of the Epiphyte government, using valid ID codes, so stated."
"And people don't lie in a murder investigation?"
Human people yes, and human government definitely, but there is no record of an Epiphyte lying ever, and the reverence they hold for Galina, the victim's progenitor, is well documented history that establishes the familial relationship as defined in Epiphyte culture."
"..."
"Speaking of culture, I must remind you that NT has laws against racist behavior toward androids and you're in violation. Your racist statements about our Epiphyte guests are an aggravating factor. I suggest you spend your time preparing those forms instead of complaining about it. "
You bring up a good point here: the Epiphytes are telepathic, so they can't really lie to one another, so it probably wouldn't even occur to them to do it with others.
Assuming that telepathic abilities preclude the ability to (or the necessity for) deceit seems an unjustified assumption to me. Per Colors of the Sun, the Epiphyte telepathic capacity is likened to a radio, under the control of the individual in question. Last I checked, it was perfectly possible to lie over the radio — or other forms of broadcast media.
As they describe it, though, it was said, (paraphrasing), it is to our ability as a radio is to sound, and I could be misinterpreting, but she made it out as a comparison: the ability she was gifted was a channel into their telepathy. It doesn't really tell me if they, or Galina have that kind of control over the content. Think of the radio. When the mic is on, you transmit all the sounds in the room, even stuff you might not want the recipient to hear. I don't know if I'm misinterpreting, or if the comparison isn't quite so literal. It's entirely possible that they could filter content so as to be able to lie, but as the trope goes, telepaths often complain of TMI, and have to train themselves to "tune out" the noise of others' thoughts, because it so uncomfortable. Telepathy, to me, seems more like everyone is always transmitting, but the gift of telepathy rests in the receiving.
Re: Alt text, @Tokyo Rose, you did this perfectly.
Andrea's idea isn't half bad. Let Coburn talk 'at' the Epiphytes. I don't know how Andrea is keeping herself from defenestrating this person. Andrea certainly understands family!
Well, no, you can't defenestrate someone without a window. I got my cue from the last panel, where it looked like a room. On more careful observing, you are right; it looks like a rooftop. It's what I get for commenting when I'm only half awake.
:D Below, Gilrandir had pointed out that they were going from their starting place out to the roof during their discussion. I should have also noted it from last page where Cici's cartoon clearly showed her booting Coburn off a roof. I clearly didn't have enough coffee! LOL
Technically speaking, no, it requires a window. That said, it *can* be done while one is outside. You just need to throw the person just right, including both angled the right way and hard enough, that their trajectory enters a space that is considered 'inside' and leaves that space via a window at some point before they come to a rest.
It's tricky to do this with humans, because their splat speed is so close to their bounce speed.
No, no, 'refenestrating' them only applies if they've been either fenestrated or defenestrated at least once already. If this is their first time, it's a simple fenestration.
oh Goddess...
artist: annoying. writer: got it. me: nailed it.!
next scene the Epiphyte talks to 'coburn' only in full context.! IE: full name with ALL titles and slowly.. (or would that be called droning on.?) ,, but only to coburn.. while part of them is 'droning' to coburn the other "talks" to Andrea ..
First, my compliments to the artistic team, en masse. Fun pages, lovely art and thought-provoking conversation.
I will say that the scene is a trifle dark for me, so I feel like I may be missing some of the fine details. I believe I understand the thematic intent, so that is all good, but I hate to think I am not appreciating things you spent time and attention putting into the scene.
I do have a question, though: Why is Administrator Coburn still there? She (ostensibly) came down to the morgue to inform Detective Valorian about the paperwork that was needed, but not getting done. Detective Valorian nodded sympathetically in all the right places, while gratefully noting that none of this was her problem. Coburn then followed Valorian up to the roof, no doubt haranguing her all along the way about the importance of her work and the necessity of her work and the shameful way that others were neglecting her work ... all without actually doing any of the work she is talking about that needs so urgently to get done.
She might have been hoping for a brush with celebrity, except her apparent ignorance and prejudice would seem to rule that out. So, what has brought her up to that rooftop to spend her so-valuable time in Detective Valorian's company? Does she have a crush on her? Is she stalking her? Does Andrea owe her money? Inquiring minds want to know! ^_^
Lot's of questions there. So, spoilers?(not really)
In a way I think the Administrator just wants to be there for something different. She spends all day every day doing the exact same thing, and this is thrillingly different. Oh, and safe. No one getting set on fire or defenestrated, for instance!
Though we did note that Andrea was thinking about throwing someone off a roof top earlier? I guess ignorance is bliss for Coburn? Honestly, knowing our creative duo, I suspect that things will get a bit awkward for our good administrator. Of course, the same could be true of Andrea. After all, a perfect discussion over a body is a hard thing to be had, right?
One might suggest she take all those forms ans fold them into very sharp origami pointed spheres. Then insert those same spheres where the sun doesn't shine to better remove hemorrhoids more efficiently than Prep H.
Fair enough. And I will observe that I posted earlier that I thought that, in general, bureaucrats get an undeserved ‘bad rap’. But I do think that the stereotypical qualities that most people would associate with a hypothetical ‘suitability index’ for those kinds of jobs are not often highly valued.
i have nothing but respect for everyone.. everyone knows good and bad.. heck there are good and bad officers too. think of what would have happened if Andrea had not gotten the case.
Funny! But if she's complaining about preparing forms she is low level, and likely to stay there because of her preference for complaining when she has work to do, and her racist atitude.
We have ample historical evidence from many cultures and eras to show that a racist attitude does not necessarily bar one from advancing to elevated levels within a bureaucracy. (See me nimbly dodging the prohibition against specific real world political commentary. ^_^ )
This has to do with the website and not the comic, for some reason, possibly igconito, all of the images on the page which load from insecure urls are not displaying properly. I think this is because of secure/insecure mixing. I was puzzled why the navigation buttons, which still function btw, were not displaying when I realized they were loading from your test site which for obvious reasons can't share a subdomain certificate with the main site. This also applies to images from 3rd party sites that are being loaded via http links.
If I right click and display the http image links, they are being redirected to me as https by your server and then display properly.
Other than Galatea and Galnia most of the entries on cast page are not loading either. I didn't check other pages for mixed url content, eg insecure links loading from secure content sites.
I'm also getting this weird effect from other Webcomics but I wasn't able to run it down until saw yours.
I'm surprised Epiphytes being telepathic isn't common knowledge, provided as part a basic education. Surely such a fundamental aspect of the only extraterrestrial race humanity has contact with would be kinda important general knowledge?
I'm sure Epiphytes being telepathic is common knowledge for anyone not spending all their waking hours memorizing form numbers so that they can be in the top two percent of the suitability index for being a paper pusher.
I mean, it doesn't really excuse this but, y'know, I try to be understanding & all that.
