The "Rome" miniseries is required watching for any who wants to understand classical-era society, and why even the middle-class relied on slavery. And why the slaves remained loyal.
For the free classes, slaves were their dishwashing machines and microwaves. For the slaves, they got stability; on the streets of a city like Rome life without stability was horrible. Also I've mentioned before - some people just enjoy hierarchy.
(I suspect the authors of this webcomic *have* seen it and moreover have read up on Roman life and society.)
