I guess you can do anything if you use "good of the people" as an excuse. :P

Now that's downright inspirational!

Anytime a leader starts spouting off that something is "for the good of the people" is all the excuse anyone needs to assassinate them or preemptively declare war on that nation.

agreed... so.. in the imortal words of drowning pool.... let the bodies hit the floor.!!!

Interesting. Decimus would consider killing Lynn "for the good of his people". Trouble is, Centcomm would also consider killing Lynn "for the good of her people". How do you tell?

All-in-all, it's just another word in the wall. :-)

Just finished burning my way through the archives. Interesting setting: post-apocalypse / Singularity with some imaginative twists and compelling characters. Consider me hooked.

I love it -- "While I find it personally repugnant to do what I am doing, heck, I'm gonna do it anyway." Spoken like all fascist dictators throughout history would. And I like how he wants to raise up legions to "keep the peace." Yeah right.

Well, it is fitting that the phrase "if you want peace, prepare for war" was coined by Roman authors :-)

Unfortunately, this remains true as long as there are people with "ambitions" in power anywhere in the world. (Of course the irony in *this* case is, that Decimus is actually the one with "ambitions" :-) )

The worst thing about that is that even when they do indeed prevent the outbreak of war, military spendings are essentially wasting a significant portion of available resources, reducing the effective wealth of the entire population. Some claim that Germany's ascend to an economic superpower after the war, is directly attributable to the fact that they were barred from becoming a major military power again for decades, while the other NATO members provided protection for them for free...

Of course! Keep the peace by keeping the "piece" you already have, and taking and/or destroying the pieces anyone else has in the off chance they want to take your piece.
