Tokyo Rose
Been waiting for this page, because I have a terrible feeling that the first panel is likely to launch a thousand 'ships, and I wanted to have a nuclear stealth submarine waiting patiently at the harbor, ready to sink every last goddamn one with brutal salvos of anti-'shipping missiles and depth charges made of rage.

Now that I've tortured that metaphor to the point of death, check out panels 2 and 6. I was working on this page when I noted to Terri that there really ought to be at least SOME blood transfer on the candlestick and floor, and Terri obliged fantastically. I'm delighted with the final effect. (Hard to see in the last panel, but you can make out the smudge on the floor.)

Aunt Kali inquires...*

*(Whole lot of clenching going on.)
Centcomm 4th Nov 2012, 9:34 PM edit delete reply

oh yes...
dpallee 4th Nov 2012, 9:43 PM edit delete reply

-at least she has a clean room and did all her homework.
Centcomm 4th Nov 2012, 9:59 PM edit delete reply

faceplams .. heh! yes kali practices the "scared striaght" methodology of child care!
Tokyo Rose 4th Nov 2012, 10:02 PM edit delete reply

She's a very tidy teenager. It's kind of a shock.
cattservant 4th Nov 2012, 10:15 PM edit delete reply

Maybe that's what Kali was warning Decimus about.
Centcomm 5th Nov 2012, 6:20 AM edit delete reply

This incident is "exactly" what she was warning Deck about.
cattservant 5th Nov 2012, 6:27 AM edit delete reply

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that he is obsessively organized too.
mushroomisland 4th Nov 2012, 9:44 PM edit delete reply

whose side would she be on??? o__o
I mean, is she that loyal or can she judge for her self
cattservant 4th Nov 2012, 9:47 PM edit delete reply

Check out her cast page entry...
Centcomm 4th Nov 2012, 9:59 PM edit delete reply

she is on her own side/.. suviving:D
Draginbeard 4th Nov 2012, 10:52 PM edit delete reply

oooo almost missed the blood on the candle stick (which of course makes me think the butler did it).

Kali does sort of have a strange, ominous presence. Not quite as much an open flame as TeeDee, more like a surgeon patiently holding a blade waiting...
Centcomm 4th Nov 2012, 10:55 PM edit delete reply

then I conveyed her "emotions" totally YAY!
Draginbeard 5th Nov 2012, 12:18 AM edit delete reply

definitely =D I get a cross between chills and creeped-out watching her.
Centcomm 5th Nov 2012, 6:01 AM edit delete reply

Then she is doing her job perfectly :D
Rashala 4th Nov 2012, 11:43 PM edit delete reply

is it me or is acantah Suprised KAli even bothered to come see?
Centcomm 5th Nov 2012, 5:59 AM edit delete reply

Yes she is. :D Amusing isnt it ? whats Surpriseing Acantha more is that shes not yelling at them or trying to fold Lynn into a small oragami design
LooeyQ 5th Nov 2012, 4:46 AM edit delete reply

It was Kali, with the candlestick in the bed room! I'd like to solve the mystery! :D
Centcomm 5th Nov 2012, 6:00 AM edit delete reply

you know actually it was Lynn in the bedroom with the candlestick and dont think that joke escaped me .. I started calling that the "clue scene" in my head. that or "clubbed like a baby seal"
LooeyQ 5th Nov 2012, 6:42 AM edit delete reply

Right Lynn! I can be bad with names, sorry! LOL! This scene calls for a little butler played by Tim Curry action! ;D
Centcomm 5th Nov 2012, 6:43 AM edit delete reply

Oh yes ... yes it does .. although if this were a movie I know who Tim curry could play... Mhahaha !
cattservant 5th Nov 2012, 6:36 AM edit delete reply

It occurs to me that you could make a somewhat possible cross-medium connection between Kali and this...

Something is rotten is the state of Denmark and really stinks to high heaven. And one can't fool robots as easily as one can fool melancholy princes.
Centcomm 5th Nov 2012, 9:07 AM edit delete reply

Oh ? yes many things have a slightly rotten smell here :D
cattservant 5th Nov 2012, 10:22 AM edit delete reply

I just noticed Kali's 'impact eye whiskers' in panel 3. Could it be implied that she is having an emotional reaction?
Centcomm 5th Nov 2012, 3:56 PM edit delete reply

could be , shes a andriod. and they do have emotions no matter how much control they have... what shes feeling .. well "D
cattservant 5th Nov 2012, 5:03 PM edit delete reply

Maybe a twinge of nautical disapproval?
Tokyo Rose 5th Nov 2012, 4:11 PM edit delete reply

I think of it as the visual equivalent of a musical sting. It would be kind of awkward to actually write "dun-dun-DUUNNNN" into the panel :)
cattservant 5th Nov 2012, 4:57 PM edit delete reply

Visual code and subtle emphasis...
KarToon12 5th Nov 2012, 3:40 PM edit delete reply

Hmm...this is going to be interesting. Maybe Kali's going to help them?
Centcomm 5th Nov 2012, 3:57 PM edit delete reply

could be .. or shes gonna be really miffed :P
velvetsanity 12th Apr 2013, 3:23 PM edit delete reply

Possibly both. Help them, and be miffed about the situation that drekhead created.
Dragonrider 5th Nov 2012, 7:13 PM edit delete reply

Lets see here Kali has touched, and photographed the candleholder, the entire scene and has analyzed the body odors to ascertain that big brother was the only person sexually excited here, and the girls are scared past sanity. That was before she kicked the candlestick to announce her presence before someone blurted out something she would have had to have acted with official disapproval on. She has now given them the indication that Linn is also under her unofficial protection by inquiring about her welfare and ignoring the fact that Linn just smacked bejesus out of Dec's head when he tried a bit of:
Vice is nice
But incest is best.
Keep it all in the family
says Archie Bunker.

Her next move might be to suggest they visit the Doctor to get something to calm their nerves while she slides out to make sure the bikes are fueled, stocked with self defense weapons such as Linn's electro blade, money and cred sticks, clothing and toiletries. But that's just a thought.
Centcomm 5th Nov 2012, 7:32 PM edit delete reply

its not a bad thought - really its not !
Dragonrider 5th Nov 2012, 7:49 PM edit delete reply

Gee thanks, tell my boss I have good ideas I might get a raise.
Centcomm 5th Nov 2012, 7:53 PM edit delete reply

Id be happy to ! :D love the assesment of Kali's actions! great stuff !
GeekPrime 17th Nov 2012, 9:39 PM edit delete reply

TR, not to burst your bubble about blood transfer, but 1) unless you change the actual action previous drawings (there is none) you can't, and 2) You are talking about Hollywood effects. No blood transfer, unless there is a second or a third hit.

If you club someone once, regardless of what your club is, the victim's blood will have no time to exit the wound to stain the club. Unless a few hundred milliseconds have elapsed AND there is a second hit _in the same place_, there will only be traces of skin/hair on your club. This is simple physics, but again you're talking Hollywood physics.

This would not apply for a knife stab since a knife, if the stab/slice is deeper than a millimeter or so, actually TOUCHES the victim's blood. The return path through the skin/ muscle tends to clean the knife blade so a single stab would only have very little blood on it, but much like a club, a repeated stab/slice would have the blood which has flowed out of the would transferred to the blade.

But don't mind me - take all the artistic license you like, I'm VERY much enjoying the story! ...and as I've mentioned before (maybe on another comic:( ), I would even if these were stick-figure illustrations!
Centcomm 17th Nov 2012, 9:57 PM edit delete reply

it may be a hollywood effect but I think it works - and yes you are correct on the forensics side - dramatic licence if you will :D

Glad you are enjoying the story :D hopfully we can continue to please our readers :D
Tokyo Rose 17th Nov 2012, 10:07 PM edit delete reply

Yes, it's certainly Hollywood blood transfer; we do know how it works in real life. When I was doing the text layouts, though, the candlestick kept looking "too clean". (See also "Reality is Unrealistic" and related entries on TVTropes.)

Cent does an astounding amount of nauseating medical research for wounds and other visual effects, and I'm a crime buff to such a degree that if the cops ever check my browser history, I'll have to provide alibis for the last ten years of my life. We tend to do our homework BEFORE we go "Fuck it, artistic license time!"

I freely admit that part of my motivation was to see if Cent could pull it off in postwork. >)
GeekPrime 17th Nov 2012, 10:32 PM edit delete reply

I stand humbled.

And thank you again for an awesome comic with a deep story!
Centcomm 17th Nov 2012, 10:35 PM edit delete reply

and thank YOU for being one of our readers :D
Tokyo Rose 17th Nov 2012, 10:37 PM edit delete reply

Given how many works of media DON'T do the research, it's an understandable point. I'm a computer nerd, and every time I see computers doing freaking magic on TV or in movies, I want to tie a writer to a waterwheel and throw things at them every time they cycle up for air . . .
velvetsanity 12th Apr 2013, 3:26 PM edit delete reply

sharp pointy things? :D
Oldarmourer 18th Jun 2019, 7:18 AM edit delete reply
having been 'hands-on' involved in more than one similar incident of blunt weapon assault and the investigations thereof, I think I can safely say that:

A-Yes, there IS a distinct possibility if not probability of transfer of skin/hair/blood (if the tissue was torn on a single strike), the simple act of contact does the transfer and since the weapon has to make contact to do injury, then it only stands to reason that any transfer would take place on any hit, nothing makes the first strike immune to the laws of physics.

B-If the first or indeed any strike ruptures the skin, then there is an immediate 'blood spatter' from the hydraulic pressure imparted to the blood vessels and that pattern is used in crime scene analysis, although the interpretation of the meaning of individual drops is open to discussion.

C-the top flange of the candlestick appears to be thin enough and the edges would be both sharp enough and curved enough to produce a slicing wound from virtually any angle and scalp wounds bleed a LOT.

D- maybe the prince is on blood thinners ;)
Some Ed 2nd Jun 2017, 7:08 AM edit delete reply
Given the medium, I think there's sufficient room to infer a second hit happened from the fact that panel 2 depicts blood on the weapon. I don't see a second hit as necessarily causing a problem for the story. Hit one. What? He didn't even move? Hit two. Oh, shit, that's! EEP!!
Mark_L_A 30th May 2015, 2:59 AM edit delete reply

In my mind Kali ask "Injuries?... ... ... Acantha? With a slightly long pause in there. Like she is formulating a response to what she might be told, and she is hoping or processing various lines of actions already, depending on if Acantha or Lynn have injuries that require medical attention.
