If she knew it had auto nav she could have left the Doctor talking to herself a looonng time ago!

Veronica is only annoying and regards androids as people. Connie's former supervisor, on the other hand, was a humanocentric asshole who took every opportunity to make her life hell. From her perspective, it's probably nice to have all that ire directed at someone else for a change. She might also think that letting Veronica vent now will calm her down some. I have my doubts...that woman seems to have the energy of a hyperactive child on a sugar rush.
Centcomm 11th Jun 2013, 7:39 PM edit delete reply

Dr Silver actually does like sugar sticks.. its a treat in New troy similar to liquid candies..
Sheela 12th Jun 2013, 2:42 AM edit delete reply

Well, to be fair, Connie has a lot of training in "just go along with it" from her former employer.
cattservant 13th Jun 2013, 8:56 AM edit delete reply

Are they on the tariff schedule?
cattservant 11th Jun 2013, 6:49 PM edit delete reply

Of course a good argument (discussion) has its charms. Connie must have gotten a little satisfaction (at least to begin with) out of holding her own against the Expert* Doctor.

[I'm pretty sure she knows there is an autopilot. She's being android polite!]

*(Of course they are all from out-of-town at the moment.)
Centcomm 11th Jun 2013, 7:15 PM edit delete reply

Most ships have a "drive-brain" however its still safer to have a pilot watching things. unless you have a REALLY good Drive brain. and Connie, may not have activated it.
Sheela 12th Jun 2013, 7:55 AM edit delete reply

One would suspect that Mr Black have one of the very best Drive Brains available.
highlander55 11th Jun 2013, 7:17 PM edit delete reply

But if she knew the Duct tape was close at hand it would have been different! Hey! I don't care what century it is, damn stuff is still probably required in the Emergency tool kit.
Centcomm 11th Jun 2013, 7:36 PM edit delete reply

and yes .. its STILL Duck-tape.. ok its suppose to be called Duct-tape but its called "Duck-Tape" lingual drift and all...and no one even knows what a "Duck" is hardly...
Don B. 11th Jun 2013, 7:59 PM edit delete reply
I bet Veronica does. I can just see it...Veronica: "if it walks like a duck, sounds like a duck and looks like a duck, then it's probably a duck." Connie: "What's a duck?"
highlander55 11th Jun 2013, 7:59 PM edit delete reply

What??! nobody remembers Duck Rodgers in the 24th and 1/2 century?
Centcomm 11th Jun 2013, 8:11 PM edit delete reply

Cent-comm does.. but then she remembers almost everything..
velvetsanity 11th Jun 2013, 8:01 PM edit delete reply

Actually, "Duck Tape" is a brand name of duct tape :D
Sheela 12th Jun 2013, 2:44 AM edit delete reply

LOL - What are the chances of that ?

Well, appearently 1 to 1.
scassett 12th Jun 2013, 6:39 AM edit delete reply

Actually, both are right. The product is Duct Tape (originally designed to patch HVAC ducting). The major brand is Duck Tape!! As they say during afternoon programing, "Now you Know!"
velvetsanity 11th Jun 2013, 8:04 PM edit delete reply

This is the point where Connie says "Well, I don't really need sleep, and it's always better to have someone intelligent keeping an eye on Dr. Grumpy anyway" :D
cattservant 11th Jun 2013, 10:41 PM edit delete reply

Who definitely doesn't have an autopilot!
Sheela 12th Jun 2013, 2:44 AM edit delete reply

Well, the Good Doctor will need to sleep eventually.
Draginbeard 11th Jun 2013, 11:27 PM edit delete reply

Gratz on the bump on the comic list, and well deserved readership!

Sheela 12th Jun 2013, 2:45 AM edit delete reply

Lies .. it all happens by magic ! XD
velvetsanity 12th Jun 2013, 6:23 AM edit delete reply

Yes! The magic of having George Takei play a very important role in the sister comic! :D
Sheela 12th Jun 2013, 7:16 AM edit delete reply

Also lies .. they're really siamese twins ! XD

.. also, magic !
cattservant 12th Jun 2013, 3:50 PM edit delete reply

It's actually a 'grandmother' comic!
Hornet 12th Jun 2013, 6:26 AM edit delete reply
Could you imagine the the verbal abuse if she had left the doctor to stew for the last several hours??? Fire and brimstone everywhere.
KarToon12 12th Jun 2013, 6:29 AM edit delete reply

She's an android. She can handle it. :)
Centcomm 12th Jun 2013, 3:32 PM edit delete reply

she can handle the shocks.. ( figure where that came from ) :D
scassett 12th Jun 2013, 6:41 AM edit delete reply

Do we know what the Human/Android ratio is if we include all classes, not just citizens?
cattservant 12th Jun 2013, 6:54 AM edit delete reply

There's a significant difference between New Troy and Nova Roma! New Sparta is somewhere in the middle I think.
Centcomm 12th Jun 2013, 7:11 AM edit delete reply

ive never actually put hard numbers down..
but its several Million including All ( andriod/human all classes )

new troy is about the size of new york so could support around 8 million or so..

New york as of 2011 is 8.245 million
Sheela 12th Jun 2013, 7:23 AM edit delete reply

So, about 8 million .. and ...
- How many is human ?
- How many is Android ?
- How many is .. other ?
Centcomm 12th Jun 2013, 7:33 AM edit delete reply

I think based on discussions taking the entire human population in and around new troy . the ratio is 51% andriod to 49 percent human and a smaller sub percentage of "other" that would be Luna personelle ( who are slightly apart from humans and Epiptyes maybe 5 or 10 individuals in the whole city
Sheela 12th Jun 2013, 7:53 AM edit delete reply

Ah ok, so Advanced Robots and AI's don't qualify as part of the population.
Centcomm 12th Jun 2013, 9:25 AM edit delete reply

correct.. there is only 1 AI in new troy.. Cent-Comm and advanced robots and "synthetic intelligences" like drive brains and other bots do not count as beings.. they have no emotions or care about anything .. and consume nothing but parts and electricty..

Almost every device in new troy has some sort of "intelligence"
scassett 12th Jun 2013, 10:17 AM edit delete reply

So if it is essentially a 50/50 split, Silver may have a point.
Sheela 12th Jun 2013, 1:34 PM edit delete reply

you say it like your'e surprised ?
It's not like she's unintelligent, or anything.
Centcomm 12th Jun 2013, 2:45 PM edit delete reply

also please dont take my numbers as gosple .. we never really figured out the population totals.
Sheela 12th Jun 2013, 4:23 PM edit delete reply

Hmmm ... your words as gospel ?

Several thousand years in the future :
And so, on the 3.14th day of the 21st rotation, the Reverse Master Switcher brought the attention of his second semester techies, the 4th gospel of the Centcomm.

RMS : "And so mote it be, or something like that, using an archaic notation that noone else use anymore - that the 8.245 million was mixed in a ratio of 51% human and 49 % android, and a smaller sub percentage of .. other."

The techies ohh'ed and ahh'ed and made three-quarter rotations of their third digit.
One techie spoke up - "but Reverse Master, what is a human ?"

RMS : "According to the Second Verse of the Tokyo Rose Rant, it was one of the main ingredients in making smoothies that would taste good with Girl Scout Cookies!"

Several more three-quarter rotations of the third digits happened, and even a few 3/5ths rotations happened.
The little techie asked again "the ones with real Girl Scouts in them ?"

RMS : "yes"

A 2.8 kilo volt shock moved trough the crowd of techies and one even rebooted.

"And that," intoned the RMS, "is why the 4th gospel of the Centcomm is so important. For the doggie that smokes salmons and the Tokyo Rose that Rants about everything ... says so."

And everyone agreed.
Centcomms words were indeed the holy gospels of the ancient random access memory.

And none of them knew, that in the ancients times, the Tokyo Rose had rewritten everything in her own words, before letting the gospels be written down into permanent memory ... she did it for the lulz. :)
Centcomm 12th Jun 2013, 4:27 PM edit delete reply

I have .. no words.. O_O LOL
Sheela 12th Jun 2013, 4:30 PM edit delete reply

Indeed, you have gospels ! :D
velvetsanity 13th Jun 2013, 12:24 AM edit delete reply

"... she did it for the lulz. :) "

I could see that, given what we've seen of Rose so far.
Sheela 13th Jun 2013, 5:03 AM edit delete reply

He he, yeah.

Also it would be an excellent way of covering the trails of some of the .. less heroic deeds some of the AIS's have done.
Mayyday 12th Jun 2013, 7:37 AM edit delete reply

When in doubt, just go for appeasment. ^_^

Poor Connie...
Sleel 12th Jun 2013, 7:41 AM edit delete reply

Allrighty. She's had her bitch fest. I love em too. Now if I was the boss driving them around, I'd tell her to shut up or she gets to ride on the roof. Might be getting paid to deliver the package. Ain't being paid to listen to it bitch every klick of the way.
Centcomm 12th Jun 2013, 9:23 AM edit delete reply

note he went to BED - :D you will find Mister Black and Silver have a interesting relationship >D
Rashala 12th Jun 2013, 2:44 PM edit delete reply

you'd think In the future....there would be I dunno....Tranq guns or such that could render someone totally unconscious for a day or two......
Centcomm 12th Jun 2013, 2:56 PM edit delete reply

there are ... :D
Rashala 12th Jun 2013, 4:46 PM edit delete reply

and they are not using them on Doctor complains a lot why?
Centcomm 12th Jun 2013, 5:21 PM edit delete reply

becuase the only one shes been non stop complaining to is Connie.. no one else stuck around ..and Connie is too nice to say anything..
Don B. 12th Jun 2013, 5:25 PM edit delete reply
If you think she's bad now, what do you think she'd be like after being tranqed? You'd probably be better off just shooting her. I imagine she's a dangerous enemy (smart people can get you in ways you'd never see coming) and that would seriously piss her off.
Centcomm 12th Jun 2013, 5:31 PM edit delete reply

Oh and the good doctor DOES know how to play dirty. theres a reason they put up with her..
Sheela 12th Jun 2013, 5:58 PM edit delete reply

The question is then, does she also know how to play nice ?
cattservant 12th Jun 2013, 3:55 PM edit delete reply

Long ship board cruises leave you plenty of time to 'rearrange the deck chairs'...
mushroomisland 8th Jul 2013, 4:20 PM edit delete reply

Oh! Lol, I've forgotten about him for a while... o_o

The New Troy system may not be perfect (like they haven't managed to elminiate poverty), but Connie's points are valid. Though, while she's obviously overreacting, the Dr. may have some good points, too. It sounds like that even in New Troy the biases between humans and androids are still a major obstacle to living together and getting along. Aside from the andy bigots (like Connie's former boss), there are also human bigots (like Teedee).

And that's just in New Troy, where andies practically have full human rights and humans generally treat them as such. That's NOTHING like New Rome, to say nothing of the other city states and remnants of civilization, where the situation is different.

Invent something, Dr. Silver! Politics is not your forte!

As smart as Dr. Silver is, it's a shame she can't see that further efforts at resolving the biases (both kinds) would go a long way for better properity and human-andy integration. She's a brilliant scientist who's in a position to do something or invent something towards that end.

Specifically, it boggles my mind that it's the year 38XX - almost 2 millenia since the Luna Star story where sentient AI was uncommon - and they STILL haven't perfected a way to download a human brain into a positronic brain and artificial body. Come on! With their high tech level, I find that unbelievable (especially since there is some limited contact with alien civilizations).

If nothing else, it's a crying shame that they haven't got the tech to do a Ghost-in-the-Shell thing by giving humans the option of becoming a full-conversion cyborg (human brain in a bottle inside an andy body). It breaks my suspension of disbelief.

I say that if they had either kind of tech, that would (in theory) improve human-andy relations. If a portion of the "human" population were full conversion cyborgs, then they'd have little excuse to look down on andys or treat them differently. And they'd have a better appreciation of how andys live. Andy's too, might tend to look at humans differently.

And if humans were downloaded into andy bodies - especially if they're categorized as a type of andy in their new lives - that'd change a lot of perspectives.

The ultimate, though, would be if humans could not only be "downloaded" but also have a way of sharing thoughts and experiences directly with andies - sort of like telepathy or thought transference.
xpacetrue 5th Apr 2014, 3:15 AM edit delete reply
For that matter: Why can't andies share thoughts and experiences directly with each other, sort of like memory or thought transference? Are there laws against this? If so, why? What about andy skill sets? Is there anything stopping them from voluntarily sharing their skill files with each other?
