With all the rules and restrictions, I can see why Wasterlanders wouldn't apply to New Troy too often.
Mira is a VERY special girl, I think. She is smart, dedicated, loyal and friendly. Love her comment there, Rose, "Y' take it easy now." :-D Oh and I love the 3rd panel there, CentComm. Mira looks really good there. :-)
Apparently though, SOMETHING doesn't sit well with her in the last panel. Sounds like Mira isn't used to self guided cars? :-D Especially FLYING cars that guide themselves. :-) One of many things she probably is going to have to get used to in the Big City. :-D
Love Mira's reaction there. Seems however aware she might be of the auto drive feature (as a mechanic, she must at least have heard of it), actually sitting in a vehicle using it is somewhat...disturbing. It's nice to see that she can be taken aback like that as she is normally pretty self possessed. She's good people and I don't actually want to see her taken down a peg or anything, it's just that this is a side of her I doubt is seen often.
Good point Don. I think she is pretty much in charge of her life normally. She is (VERY) competent in her field and knows the players in her world. Unfortunately, she is very much NOT in her world right now.

So far so good, calm before the storm? massive traffic jam, "accidental" traffic accident, call me paranoid but I don't trust our unfriendly AI and harking back a page of so how did Centcomm know to flag Miri? Who's the fink now, besides the earrings, wait didn't Centcome say those were only earrings back on the page labeled Trust??? so whos the fink?
CentComm probably set it up that Dollys vehicle breakdown would be somewhere in the vicinity if Joleet. Couple that with the fact that Mira wants to see Calliope and you don't actually NEED a fink. CentComm is likely paranoid enough by now she'd flag a housefly if it was from there.
LOL. The fly with its arms in the air, don't shoot, I just smelled something rotten up there! I mean, it smelled REALLY sweet, rotten tang of really ripe corruption. :-D
Yeah I think CentComm has flags out, but I think they are for ANYTHING trying to get into the Platinum Sector. Be it your fly or a bottle of perfume. It probably has to be tripled checked, triple approved and then it is STILL monitored within an inch of its life. And if someone tries to get in WITHOUT said approval, well they can always use fertilizer at the organic farm experiment. :-\ Because you are right, Don... Looks up Paranoid in the dictionary, oh look there is a picture of CentComm's doll... :-D
A realistic reaction: computer-directed traffic with flying cars would be pretty terrifying for the unaccustomed. Rollercoasters are not an enjoyable thrill for me.
Ah, well we have automated undergrounds/subways, and they run pretty smooth. And the fast trains when they run on the high speed lines basically run automatically, too, with the driver just monitoring. With about 300 kph there is not much one can do...
Sounds like it Rash; however, manual drive mode might not be ALLOWED in the Platinum Sector. I mean, if CentComm is paranoid enough (which I think she is), manual flight is probably illegal. Surrender control of your vehicle while you are in the Platinum Sector or stay out of the area. :-) Or find out all the anti-vehicle weapontry the CentComm has protecting the area, for the brief time you continue to exist. :-)
According to the news reports I am seeing self driving cars are getting closer. The idea of a self driving car was started by Charles Teetor, founder of Perfect Circle Piston Rings. He invented automatic dimmer controls for headlights, turn signals, cruise control and several other items along that line. His goal was a self driving auto because he went blind due to a childhood illness.
Well given the fact that Aircraft spend one H of a lot of flight time on auto-pilot, as do seagoing vessels, cars and trucks are next kids. Though my bet is on commercial line-haul rigs being the first equipped for something like that.
Most planes, trains and ships STILL use expert human guidance when they get into congested areas. The computer controls are great when they aren't likely to need to make decisions about other vehicles in the area. They sometimes get confused when they have to deal with rapidly changing situations or too many variables at once. Eventually they will improve it, but it will always be a debate which is better in those situations.
From the looks of things in panel four, I think it's probably not advisable to drive manually (at least on the expressway). High speeds in congested traffic like that has to be rather dangerous. Synchronizing your travel route with the rest of the traffic would be safer and I'll bet the system is mature tech with proven reliability.
Again In that situation I rather drive myself......
After all since I found out centy's deep dark secret plans She wants me DEAD....and would just have the auto car ...accidentally crash into a Nitroglycerine factory under a concerte filled cargo craft that had an accidental cargo dump over the crater
Rash, CentComm would have you anyhow. She would just have you pulled over by the police for driving erratically (I mean, doing a serpentine in the traffic lanes, come on man. :-D). THEN she would drop the cement truck on you. :-D
Some of the larger commercial airplanes guidance systems are elaborate enough that in the event of an incident rendering ALL members of the flight crew incapacitated; a total non-flyer can land the plane by following tower instructions to have the onboard system access a program for the destination airport. As you would expect, the assumption is all avionics are fully functional and it is only the human component that has failed.
@ Dragonrider...Planes, trains and seagoing vessels go mainly in a straight line or have lots of empty space to navigate thru. No trees or things in it's way. Car is a different matter.
@highlander55 as I said first to adopt the technology will be line-haul trucks. They will follow control ribbons embedded in the roadway surface, employ radar, sonar and lidar in order to maintain safe distances from other vehicles also the unions will probably force featherbedding as they did with rail traffic and newspaper composing rooms (don't get me started on that one) require a human driver to be on board also, at least until robotic technology arrives at the point where we employ robots for this type work. If Charles Teetor had these technologies this discussion would not be happening.
Dragonrider.. I agree with you but my only add on to this is a human has the ability to know there is something not right about what is ahead or going on where a machine is only as good as it's programming, sensor data and stored response protocols. I am not talking about DC or LS, they are in the future (hopefully) I am talking about the now or near future.
Personally, I'd trust a robot in that sort of traffic. Many of the luxury cars like Benz's and Beemers have radar equipment on them that can steer, brake, warn of cars approaching and obstacles front and rear. It won't be long before the tech filters down to less expensive cars as well. Then it's only a matter of implanting guide wires in roadways and robot controlled cars will become a reality.
What I like about this scene is the little touches like the computer readouts in the background and the very realistic looking identi-card. It's one thing to do a nice job on dialogue and character models, but getting all the details to look good is sometimes harder than anything else.
New page. Yay! :-) Thank you for posting it for all to enjoy.

And Mira looks dashing...
Yeah, driverless cars can be scary...
And a Happy Turkey Day to you! ^^
