The moment of truth
Dragonrider 5th Dec 2013, 6:04 PM edit delete reply

So you leave us with a cliff hanger for the weekend.
Stormwind13 5th Dec 2013, 6:05 PM edit delete reply

See, FURTHER proof that CentComm is EVIL! :-)
Centcomm 5th Dec 2013, 6:18 PM edit delete reply

oh yes im totally evil :D MUHHAHA
Draginbeard 5th Dec 2013, 6:04 PM edit delete reply

ok... Vinnie is freaking COOL!
Centcomm 5th Dec 2013, 6:18 PM edit delete reply

hehe ! ive been saving him for a while :D
Stormwind13 5th Dec 2013, 6:41 PM edit delete reply

I think he is more like HOT death, Draginbeard! I mean, read that list of weapons there. :-p
Stormwind13 5th Dec 2013, 6:05 PM edit delete reply

Twitchy, isn't Vinnie? And WAY over armed. I mean, I don't see an anti-matter bomb, but he has about everything else! :-D

Does Vinnie speak with an Italian accent? :-D
Centcomm 5th Dec 2013, 6:17 PM edit delete reply

maybe .. "Vinnie" is a medium heavy War mech. Pure military the upper cannons are 2 pairs of 2 20mm plasma cannons the right arm is a 25mm laser gat the left arm is a combo heavy blaster and back up laser. the panel on its body ( head ) center is a 8 pack of Fusion core micro missles. it also carrys a heavy Barrier shield you do NOT want to mess with this bad boy.. :D
Stormwind13 5th Dec 2013, 6:37 PM edit delete reply

I feel for the city beyond though, the collateral damage could be horrendous. :-p I mean, that is a LOT of firepower in a twitchy body.

And no, I don't want to mess with something that size and that heavily armed. :-D
Dragonrider 5th Dec 2013, 6:58 PM edit delete reply

Bet Vinnies a lifetime member of the NRA.
Marcus Ramesy 6th Dec 2013, 12:16 AM edit delete reply

these bad boys are amazing.. you should see them in action some time.. its mind blowing....
Kamy 6th Dec 2013, 1:48 AM edit delete reply
Not only the mind .... :-p
Sheela 6th Dec 2013, 10:10 AM edit delete reply

I dunno man, I don't see any mouth on it, I doubt it's cunnilingus skills would be sufficient to blow anybody's mind. :(

As for his firepower, I wonder if it's sufficiant to penetrate Dr. Silver's O.R.B. drone shield fast enough to get to Dr. Silver that it doesn't get ripped apart by the other O.R.B. drones ?
I mean, those things are both fast and agile, and probably know every single weakspot Vinnie has.

It would be a short, but interesting fight - And I suspect Vinnie would need a new body after such a fight.
Centcomm 6th Dec 2013, 10:53 AM edit delete reply

Well the thing is Vinnie has a higher grade shield than Silvers drones. at least the small ones shes shown so far. and carrys a LOT more firepower a single shot from Vinnie would proably damage a drone badly.
Sheela 6th Dec 2013, 1:14 PM edit delete reply

True, but would he be able to break trough the drone's barrier shield fast enough to take out Dr. Silver before the other drones would take out vinnie ... there's more than one of them after all, and they have been programmed by one of the greatest programmers of all time (if Dr Silver can be considered a trustworthy information source), so they could conceivably be quite sneaky, while Vinnie is probably .. not very sneaky.

After all, Vinnie can only shoot at Dr silver if he has a floor to stand on, I'm sure the Drones could use that to their advantage.

Or maybe they could drop a building (or at least part of one) on top of Vinnie, again disabling him until they can properly pick his weapons apart.

And finally, there's the chance of Vinnie actually landing a hit on one of those small buggers ... I doubt they'd stick around long enough for him to have an easy target.
velvetsanity 6th Dec 2013, 5:32 PM edit delete reply

Dr. Silver is descended directly from the inestimable Tony Stark (in my head-canon, at least), so I'd say it's a safe bet that she's one of the best programmers alive. :D
Dragonrider 6th Dec 2013, 2:26 PM edit delete reply

Sheela, In re your first comment: panel 5
Stormwind13 6th Dec 2013, 2:53 PM edit delete reply

Definitely not only the mind would be blown, Kamy. The body and possibly the soul of the target would also be blown... up. :-D As would any bystanders (innocent or otherwise) and probably small chunks of the city too. :-D
cattservant 6th Dec 2013, 7:31 PM edit delete reply

Seriously (semi),
Vinnie seems like a lot of fire power just to guard a door.
Is he part of standard security, or did CCC up the ante after Lynn was abducted?
Centcomm 6th Dec 2013, 9:10 PM edit delete reply

Centcomm placed it there "after" Lynns abduction.. normally there is only automated cursory security or a Helios Tower security person ( or Dolly ) on the roof. Dolly likes it because it lets her watch the ships taking off from the skyport. ( remmeber she was on the roof when Lynn left at the beginning of the comic. )
Stormwind13 6th Dec 2013, 9:32 PM edit delete reply

Information! Yay! :-)

So Vinnie is a very recent addition. Especially necessary since Dolly isn't available, and CentComm is feeling VERY paranoid I would say. :-) Actually, I'm surprised there isn't a squad of them standing around being intimidating. :-D
Centcomm 6th Dec 2013, 9:45 PM edit delete reply

you think there is only one? heh.. you dont know centcomm very well.. also over half the NTPD is here ..
Stormwind13 7th Dec 2013, 8:38 AM edit delete reply

No, no... I didn't think there was only one. I just thought CentComm was being unusually circumspect to not have more of them out on display! :-D

And the NTPD is housed in the tower? Or am I misreading your statement?

Housing them in the tower would have good points and bad points.

More traffic would mean more opportunities for someone to sneak someone in or (if possible) to turn one of the NTPD members to be their infiltrator. Which would be VERY bad.

The good point is that there would be a ton of trained personnel on site for emergencies. And lots of extra (trained) eyes so that anything untoward happening would be more likely to be caught.

Still, "...'surprise' usually means not that one opponent truly failed to see what was coming, but rather that she misinterpreted what she saw." People assuming what they are seeing is something 'familiar' instead of something sinister.

Today is a particularly good day to remember that, as that was one of the things that occurred at Pearl Harbor, 72 years ago today. When Lt. Kermit Tyler 'decided' that the radar contact Private Joseph L. Lockard and Private George Elliot had detected were a friendly flight of B-17's instead of the incoming Japanese planes. The rest, as they say, is history.
Centcomm 7th Dec 2013, 12:14 PM edit delete reply

there is a NTPD detail assigned to the Tower untill Lynn is eather returned or the situation resolves itself. THEY are backed up by Mil-Sec personell and War mechs.. Vinnie is one such War Mechs also called "combat drones" ( these are decended from the very same Combat platforms that Am-COM used During Luna Star's Period of time.. Vinnie however is not more than 15 years old. Being a Combat Drone they have no need of "mental development" They are robots.
Sheela 7th Dec 2013, 1:28 PM edit delete reply

While a bot may not need "mental development" I reckon that their "brains" are still not exactly simple. I'm guessing there's a fair amount of building time that goes into those, but how much ?
Centcomm 7th Dec 2013, 2:18 PM edit delete reply

Cent-comms automated fabrication systems can push one of these out in 16 hours. thats from raw materials to finished and online..( redacted for spoilers )
AlpineBob 7th Dec 2013, 4:43 PM edit delete reply
"There is a NTPD detail assigned to the Tower until Lynn is either returned or the situation resolves itself."

Stormwind13 8th Dec 2013, 6:43 AM edit delete reply

They are making sure someone doesn't steal the barn too! :-D
cattservant 7th Dec 2013, 1:08 PM edit delete reply

A lot of NaCl must be slipping in to town lately...
cattservant 6th Dec 2013, 9:32 PM edit delete reply

I bet Dolly has a firmly suppressed,
But deep seated urge to get up
And go to faraway exotic places.

[Bet her 'itch' is pretty well scratched at this point!]
Stormwind13 7th Dec 2013, 8:45 AM edit delete reply

Normally I have to agree with most of your thoughts, Cat. This one though, I think I will have to disagree with. As near as I can tell, Dolly had a total dedication to her job, keeping the Taylor family safe. I don't think she had an itch beyond that before Lynn was kidnapped.

Now Dolly has her horizon's vastly expanded, with the new body and all its conflicting sensory input. That distracts her with new and wondrous things each second. Still her underlining drive is to protect the Taylor family. Dolly is dedicated to that and determined to succeed in that, first and last (but the middle is all the aggravating distractions now :-D).
Centcomm 7th Dec 2013, 12:15 PM edit delete reply

Also Correct Dolly HAS seen places before.. she went with The Taylor family past and present on many trips. in several capacitys from Nanny to Body guard.
cattservant 7th Dec 2013, 1:11 PM edit delete reply

I did say 'firmly suppressed'.
cattservant 5th Dec 2013, 6:23 PM edit delete reply

[One assumes
the 'Incoming Vehicle'
is not 'Weapons Armed'.]
Centcomm 5th Dec 2013, 6:34 PM edit delete reply

the weapons comment is refering to himself..
Sheela 6th Dec 2013, 10:11 AM edit delete reply

In short, he might be overreacting ?
Stormwind13 6th Dec 2013, 3:03 PM edit delete reply

Yeah, I think you could safely say that Sheela; however, Vinnie was DESIGNED to overreact. :-) And the nice police officer is there to keep him from needlessly upping the body count by putting a leash on Vinnie's homicidal impulses. :-)
Centcomm 7th Dec 2013, 12:16 PM edit delete reply

well to be fair he really doesnt have "impulses" or anger.. or happyness..
Stormwind13 7th Dec 2013, 4:04 PM edit delete reply

Alright, CentComm... Homicidal PROGRAMMING then. By a homicidal AI named Skyne... I mean CENTCOMM! :-D
Don B. 5th Dec 2013, 6:25 PM edit delete reply
And there's the difference between android and robot illustrated. Androids are self-aware and can appreciate/understand abstract things like art. Robots? Not so much.
Centcomm 5th Dec 2013, 6:33 PM edit delete reply

Dragonrider 5th Dec 2013, 6:47 PM edit delete reply

Their is a certain faint familial resemblance between him and Robot B-9 of "Danger Will Robinson" fame. Although in this instance the car should be saying "Danger Mira Ankur"

BTW has Centy done any reprogramming on the Battle Droids lately?
Stormwind13 5th Dec 2013, 8:49 PM edit delete reply

Doesn't sound like it Dragonrider. I mean, "Oh, by the First Circuit, not this again." To me that shows that Vinnie has been twitchy for awhile. :-)
Stormwind13 5th Dec 2013, 6:40 PM edit delete reply

Pure military, they didn't expend ANYTHING on something as abstract as Shakespeare. :-)
cattservant 5th Dec 2013, 6:50 PM edit delete reply

"lie down with robots
rise up with nuts and bolts'...
Don B. 5th Dec 2013, 10:54 PM edit delete reply
His programming must be something like "Everything is a threat until verified otherwise (in triplicate)," bordering on "Shoot first, question later." Probably why our erstwhile shakespeareian is there in the first keep him reigned in. Looks like she's had to do this a little too often for her tastes. I can just see it..."Goddamn it Vinnie!!! It's a frikkin delivery truck! On a scheduled delivery!! Just like every other week for the last TWO FRIKKIN YEARS!! DO NOT shoot it down!!! First Circuit, give me strength..."
Centcomm 5th Dec 2013, 11:32 PM edit delete reply

Actually you are not far off.. However if it WAS a threat ..
cattservant 6th Dec 2013, 2:11 AM edit delete reply

Unless he's just 'changing the subject'?
Don B. 6th Dec 2013, 9:51 AM edit delete reply
If he was an android, he might be. As a robot, his mission programming would be top priority. He is to protect that entrance from threats. Everything else is meaningless to him. Or something much like that anyway.
Centcomm 6th Dec 2013, 10:03 AM edit delete reply

Correct- "Vinnie" is a bot - with Limited interaction skill. Still like most humans Officer Alley is "humanizing" him in her mind. anything that looks like a emotion with him is just clever programming.
Don B. 6th Dec 2013, 10:18 PM edit delete reply
It seems I was off on how long this has been going on. Still, I can see where playing "Don't let the trigger happy combat mech shoot down anything that doesn't actually need shot down" would get old real fast. Especially for someone who is primarily a PEACE OFFICER. I'd say it's an interesting example in conflicting philosophies but I don't think mechs are actually capable of that kinda thing.
Pirtnac 8th Dec 2013, 1:16 PM edit delete reply
I don't know... "What is art?" is a rather good question. Hell, humans still can't answer it completely.
Don B. 8th Dec 2013, 3:05 PM edit delete reply
I believe it was meant as a query on the dictionary definition of the word "art". Understanding anything beyond that is probably beyond him. As I understand it, robots are VERY literal minded by design.
Don B. 8th Dec 2013, 3:19 PM edit delete reply
For example, imagine what might happen if Alley has said "shoot" when she facepalmed.
anarcha 5th Dec 2013, 6:47 PM edit delete reply

"This unit does not see the point." I'm pretty sure that's why my computer said to me before it died.:'(
Centcomm 5th Dec 2013, 11:32 PM edit delete reply

awwww :(
jamie59 5th Dec 2013, 7:03 PM edit delete reply

That looks like Teedee's ideal body.
cattservant 5th Dec 2013, 8:04 PM edit delete reply

It's what she wanted to be when she was little!
Centcomm 5th Dec 2013, 11:32 PM edit delete reply

heee! oh she would love it.. trust me.
mjkj 5th Dec 2013, 11:53 PM edit delete reply

Wow, great :)

I like her eyes... is she rehearsing for a play? If so, when and where will it be? *must definitely watch it*

Rashala 6th Dec 2013, 1:16 AM edit delete reply

Actually I think this thing is what TEdee would keep as a PET!
Greenwood Goat 6th Dec 2013, 2:07 AM edit delete reply
Perhaps Vinnie would do better with something a bit more martial. Henry V's well-known speech, "Once more unto the breach, dear friends..." perhaps? +DEAR FRIENDS = NETWORKED ASSAULT GROUP UNITS+

Or maybe Marc Antony's soliloquy over the body of Julius Caesar:

- "Stand DOWN, Vinnie! That’s an ORDER!! Oookay… good delivery there, but let’s not try that again..."
cattservant 6th Dec 2013, 2:16 AM edit delete reply

Stormwind13 6th Dec 2013, 3:05 PM edit delete reply

LOL. You always have a different take on things, Cat. :-)
cattservant 6th Dec 2013, 3:21 PM edit delete reply

Too many head drops as a child.
Stormwind13 6th Dec 2013, 5:58 PM edit delete reply

Or maybe not enough drops, Cat. :-D
jas 6th Dec 2013, 8:11 AM edit delete reply

Awesome facepalm moment in the last frame! :D
Centcomm 6th Dec 2013, 11:19 AM edit delete reply

I liked that too :D
Stormwind13 6th Dec 2013, 3:08 PM edit delete reply

The last panel is GREAT. The art conveys the action and the dialogue carries the emotions. :-)
Centcomm 7th Dec 2013, 12:16 PM edit delete reply

aw thanks *blushes *

Driverless Cars on the Interstate:

Hah, the comment of "And it's still better than many Utah drivers." had me laughing. :D
Dragonrider 6th Dec 2013, 10:35 AM edit delete reply

I thought this was apropos and most timely to the extended discussions about self directed vehicles.
Centcomm 6th Dec 2013, 11:18 AM edit delete reply

It works for me :D

Saturday Trivia for you:
Did you know at one time in the 60's that song was banned from being played by radio stations, for pornographic because the authorities couldn't understand the lyrics.
velvetsanity 7th Dec 2013, 12:11 PM edit delete reply

not for porn. they thought the lyrics were subversive or something along those lines
Sheela 7th Dec 2013, 12:12 PM edit delete reply

Hmm .. I wonder if you're trying to get us to ... vote ?
velvetsanity 7th Dec 2013, 12:12 PM edit delete reply

How else are we going to get Marcus to take Dr. Silver out on a date? :D
Centcomm 7th Dec 2013, 12:17 PM edit delete reply

heheh that means its gotta be - below place 10 and stay for a week :D MUHHAHAH!

(( or to be more correct the readers get to pic a person for us to expand on and we will do a short little story ( 15 page limit ) on what happened :D
Sheela 7th Dec 2013, 1:30 PM edit delete reply

Well, it has been at 17 for more than a week recently, I don't think it sounds implausible.
Caley Tibbittz Collopy 22nd Jan 2014, 1:17 PM edit delete reply

Okay, the conceit of this scene is bloody brilliant.

Hmmm this being the far future and all I wonder if the have finally debugged ED-209.
Probably not given it's reaction.

I'm not sure it's a good idea to give a multi-ton murderbot the personality and attention characteristics of a labrador retriever.
