I can hear the conversation that Rose really, really wants to have with him now. *Look you little dumb fuck nose follow the plan or I guarantee you will end up in the spare parts vats they maintain under the Black Palace*
Centcomm 17th Feb 2014, 6:23 PM edit delete reply

pretty much :D
jamie59 16th Feb 2014, 9:13 PM edit delete reply

Rose is devoting a lot of time to keeping Kyle in line.
Stormwind13 16th Feb 2014, 9:42 PM edit delete reply

Well Kyle is young enough that he NEEDS a lot to keep him in line. :-D I mean look at what he WANTED to do here. Against a visible tank and guards he wanted a crack at the Palace already.

Like a lot of young bucks, he thinks he has ALL the answers... and can charge in to fix things. Kyle is a good example why they drafted young men to be soldiers. They don't have enough sense for self-preservation. :-p They need Momma Rose to guide them, with kicks and curses. :-D
Sheela 17th Feb 2014, 9:27 AM edit delete reply

'Tis true, young men are easy to manipulate.

Old men on the other hand, much more difficult, which is why you use those as commanders instead. :D
Stormwind13 17th Feb 2014, 10:16 AM edit delete reply

Commanders are the young men that weren't as stupid or were LUCKY enough to be survive being young (and stupid) to figure out that the other side IS trying to kill you. And that rushing in can make it easier on the other side. :-)
Dragonrider 17th Feb 2014, 5:58 PM edit delete reply

As Geo Patton put it: "War is not meant to be you dying for your country-it is by making the other bastard die for his."

Stormwind13 16th Feb 2014, 9:45 PM edit delete reply

Damn that Rail Tank is a big piece of hardware. It may not be 'state of the art', but it could still rip you to pieces. :-p Especially if you are by yourself and not in an armored vehicle of your own (KYLE :-p).
Sheela 17th Feb 2014, 9:41 AM edit delete reply

I kinda like the rail tank.

Too damn many mechs in sci-fi makes me annoyed, because if you look at mechs from a military standpoint, they are horribly inefficient.

If you could make a remote controlled smooth flat rock float around with a gun on top, you'd have the best armor, the smallest profile and a good gun that could go anywhere.

Meanwhile, mechs are choke full of weakpoints unless you can wrap them in an energy shield of some sort. But then, you could wrap a regular hover car in the same shield and it would be much less expensive.

This Rail tank at least looks *somewhat* armored at the front, though the sides look weak as hell. Still, it could conceivably be used as long range shooters where they can always have their frontal armor pointed at the enemy.

Kinda like a fixed gun tank destroyer such as the Jagdpanther from WWII, which was a dangerous foe, especially if it could ambush you.
Dragonrider 17th Feb 2014, 9:51 AM edit delete reply

I agree Sheela, with that front Glacis plates angled and the side angles most hits would ricochet off also the prow allows a "hull down" position for ambush if the top Glacis is active ablative armour I damn sure would not want to tangle with one even with a platoon of reevers.
Centcomm 17th Feb 2014, 6:25 PM edit delete reply

yeah i constantly have Mister Black telling me about weak points in craft that are used in the comic >_<
Sheela 17th Feb 2014, 7:34 PM edit delete reply

Well, it *is* important to keep in mind.

After all, a competent commander will attack your weak point the moment he sees it.

Nothing like shooting the kneejoint out on a very expensive battlemech and completely disable it for the price of an RPG. :)
Dragonrider 17th Feb 2014, 9:55 AM edit delete reply

See my comment below, nasty things looks like an up gunned T-99 Main Battle Tank.
(In Soviet Union t-99 Main Battle Tank Drive You.)
highlander55 18th Feb 2014, 6:20 PM edit delete reply

Weakest point besides the ass end is under the front nose. Going up an incline it would either blast thru or ricochet even further underneath.
Dragonrider 18th Feb 2014, 8:07 PM edit delete reply

Bottom plates on that looks to have an extra armor plating front and keel,
Sheela 19th Feb 2014, 8:10 AM edit delete reply

Since it's a hover tank, it could conceivably lift it's rear end as it crests a hill, thus making it less of a target to whomever is on the other side of the hill and also not expose the belly-plates.
Stormwind13 16th Feb 2014, 10:02 PM edit delete reply

The first panel made me think of Kings Row. And even the other panels kind of did too, minus the Rail Tank. It doesn't look anything like Paladin. :-)

Stormwind13 17th Feb 2014, 10:22 AM edit delete reply

Stupid, velvet? I mean he is ALREADY doing something STUPID. And KNOWS it. Rushing into the enemies camp, with limited resources and ZERO experience in being a spy. Nevermind the fact the ground he is traveling is TOTALLY unfamiliar to him. The one saving grace (can I say that about her? :-D) is that ROSE is on his side.

If he will truly LISTEN to her and not his emotions, he has a chance to survive. If Kyle fails to listen to Rose even once, his survival chance goes in the crapper (probably making CentComm happy :-D).

Having started reading Luna Star since first reading that page, it makes a lot more sense now. Also, it begs questions of just how well Galina is known, or is it just references to her that exist in the 'common knowledge'?

yup and this is Roma not Sparta :D you can referce back to Kyle leaving Sparta for those city scape shots :D
mjkj 17th Feb 2014, 12:41 AM edit delete reply

Ah, he has arrived.

Now he only needs to become the personal servant of Acantha... :D
Stormwind13 17th Feb 2014, 10:29 AM edit delete reply

Wow. That would be a great job, but one I don't think he could get. I mean, he's male and Acantha is female. Normally 'royalty' has attendants that are the same sex.

I'm not sure Kyle could get a job as a guard either. That would probably have to pass Maxus' scrutiny. Not sure he is up to THAT interview. :-)

In fact, I can't think of what position Rose has in mind for him. I mean it has to be something that allows him to move around. And might give him plausible reason to get near to the AI's 'safe' zone. I can't think of what that job might be, but don't know about Nova Roma's job market to know all the possibilities. :-) I bet Rose knows them all though.

I would bet computer tech fixing terminals, diagnostic equipment, something he can do and allows him to get a password access to the AIS system. Even a lowest level password can be used to gain higher level by experienced hackers, and if nothing else Rose is an experienced hacker.

I'm not sure that would go over real well with Kyle. Or Lynn! :-D

Zerg rush is just another name for blitzkrieg, and will forever be a valid warfare tactic...
Dragonrider 17th Feb 2014, 9:36 AM edit delete reply

AKA: Dragonriders Rules of War.
1) If it moves and it ain't ours kill it.
2) Next unit thru shoot it again to make sure it stays down.
3) If it don't move and it ain't valuable crush it or blow it up.
Sheela 17th Feb 2014, 10:58 AM edit delete reply

If you think that a Zerg Rush is the same as Blitzkrieg, you'd be wrong.

Blitzkrieg is the "art" of attacking fast, with high mobility and high quality troops, which often allows you to punch *though* the enemy lines and then go on a rampage *behind* the enemy lines, exploiting their weaknesses while the slower parts of the army catches up and crumbles the remaining (and suddenly unsupported) enemy forces. Mobility and coordination is Key ! Computers and Radio help a lot with coordination.

The main advantage, is that you can cover much land in a short amount of time and since your troops are mobile and well, they are flexible enough to react to changing battle conditions.

Main disadvantage is that your troops can now outrun your supply train, and you need both good and high speed communication in order to make it into a large scale operation. It takes a lot of work to keep up with such a big and fast flowing operation.

A small sized blitzkrieg would be something like a viking raid, on a small fishing village, they could get in and out before the militia from the fortress could arrive. Obviously, as the name suggest, it was the Germans that developed the tactic for army size operation, where they had the organization to keep supplies, commonications(radio) and tactics up to date fast enough that they had a continious flow of fast attacks, thus denying the enemy a chance to dig in and rest up.

A Zerg Rush, on the other hand, is the "art" of attacking with *overwhelming numbers* of relatively small but cheap units. This requires a production line that is faster than the enemy, yes, but the mobility of the units themselves aren't as important as the numbers you bring to the field.

The main advantage of a Zerg Rush, is that you don't have to worry so much about micromanaging your tactics, you just swarm over the enemy. Also, in real life, your troops often have boosted morale because of the numbers. It's a tried and true tactic that has been used by many generals over the years. They'd basically look at the numbers on each side and give a good idea on who would win.

The main disadvantages comes in the form of high upkeep, a huge supply train and troops such as mass infantry are weak against artillery strikes, partly because they are both soft targets and not very mobile - But there is a lot of them, lovely, lovely targets for artillery and machineguns.

Classic zerg rush tactics that failed, would be native african tribes (and native american tribes, for that matter) throwing themelves at the British conquorors who had machineguns - The massacres were brutal.

Zerg Tactics are becoming less and less used, as a well trained soldier becomes more and more expensive, and explosive shells tends to turn *large numbers* into *small numbers*, real quick. It may come back again with remote drone warfare, since you suddenly don't loose the soldiers experience anymore, so the more they rush the enemy, the more experienced they get and eventually you have millions of veteran "soldiers" just itching to burn another robot drone down.
velvetsanity 17th Feb 2014, 12:24 PM edit delete reply

Ahhhh, ok. Thanks for making the difference clear, Sheela.
Dragonrider 17th Feb 2014, 12:28 PM edit delete reply

You teach at the college of war?
Stormwind13 17th Feb 2014, 3:15 PM edit delete reply

Sometimes the term Blitzkrieg is used erroneously in computer gaming, Sheela. I've heard it a few times there and found this on Rushing. I'm thinking maybe velvet heard it like I have in another game setting.

You gave a very good description of what the Blitzkrieg was in the real world, those 7 decades ago. :-)
velvetsanity 18th Feb 2014, 7:27 AM edit delete reply

yeah, my understanding of blitzkrieg before Sheela's explanation is that it was basically "hit them so fast and so hard that they can't react"
Centcomm 17th Feb 2014, 6:29 PM edit delete reply

nicly put Sheela :D
Stormwind13 17th Feb 2014, 10:31 AM edit delete reply

What's to LIKE, Rash? :-p I mean Douchebag is loony tunes, and not in the FUN way. And he is violently psycho. The only thing other thing I can say is he isn't paranoid... they really ARE out to get him. :-)

Stormwind13 17th Feb 2014, 3:07 PM edit delete reply

velvetsanity 17th Feb 2014, 3:10 PM edit delete reply

From the start, haven't his actions and decisions pointed to that as his *real* goal? :D
Centcomm 17th Feb 2014, 6:29 PM edit delete reply

LOOL some do indeed :D
Sheela 17th Feb 2014, 7:49 PM edit delete reply

A good zerg rush does have some elements of blitzkrieg, as you do want speed and surprise on your side, but almost all tactics wants that.

The essence of a zerg rush though, is overwhelming numbers. Whereas blitzkrieg is mobile warfare with combined arms armies.

Interesting, most modern warfare has little to do with either, as most modern wars have been massively asynchronious wars, where one side have been waging guerilla warfare on an opponent trying to hold on to what he conquered.

Eventually, guerilla warfare always "wins" in the sense that it's not worth it to hold on to a piece of land that keeps fighting you.

Vietnam was a real good example of that, though the gulf wars are also good examples.

We don't really have a modern equivalent of what Prince Douchebag is about to engage in.
velvetsanity 18th Feb 2014, 7:31 AM edit delete reply

The price of a mile can be *very* high indeed...
Sheela 18th Feb 2014, 9:34 AM edit delete reply

Trench warfare was developed to counter "zerg" tactics ... ie. large masses of human waves.
Rashala 18th Feb 2014, 2:06 PM edit delete reply

WEll Trench tactics are only effective against HUMAN waves. A Tank or armor personaell carrier rush EX. a rail tank zerg rush against trenches. would Roll over the trenches and te guys inside the safety of the tank can just cuck out grenades as they pass wipeing the tenches out.

So technically Trenches were made to counter Infantry charges and horse mounted calvary charges NOT full on zerg rushes
Sheela 18th Feb 2014, 4:32 PM edit delete reply

Ah, but when trench warfare was invented, Tanks did not exist.
Tanks, in fact, were invented as a counter to trenches.

Once tanks became good enough, trench warfare more or less disappeared. Instead you got Tank-on-tank combat, which is somewhat comparable to heavy musket cavalry combat.
Hornet 17th Feb 2014, 6:36 AM edit delete reply
